Laptop/notebook battery health

Keep an eye on your battery health

If your battery is degraded, it will lower your overall battery life and could even lead to random shutdowns. To check the health of your battery, do the following:

1. Right-click on your Start button and select either Windows Powershell, or Windows Command Prompt, depending which Windows OS you have installed on your device.

2. In the next screen, type in powercfg /batteryreport. Hit Enter.

3. Open up the path that is being shown in your Windows Explorer. For example, C:\Windows\System32\battery-report.html.

4. Scroll down to Installed batteries. Under Design Capacity you will see the original capacity of your laptop's battery. Below that is the current capacity.

With this method, I discovered  I have lost 15% of battery capacity since purchase of my Acer Aspire E5-571 laptop in 2016. Once this exceeds 20-30% battery capacity loss it is time to consider replacing the battery, or  purchasing a new laptop.
