The future of high street shopping
The first no-tills grocery store opened in Seattle on 22 January 2018. An innovative Amazon concept where shoppers simply swipe a mobile phone QR code at the store entrance, make their purchases, and on exiting the store are presented with a digital receipt on their mobile phone’s Amazon Go app.
Gianna Puerini, head of Amazon Go, said:
The groceries on offer are snacks, sandwiches, breakfast items, salads and beverages (including wine and beer). Basic food items such as bread and milk, and a range of toiletries are also available. A range of the chef-designed Amazon Meal Kits can also be purchased which consists of all the ingredients needed to make a quick home-cooked meal.
Although there are no manned cash tills, there are staff present in the kitchen preparing food, and on the shop floor to replenish shelves and aid customers.
Amazon have plans to open a further 6 no-tills grocery stores this year.
